FINE ART
Nora Johnson is a painter and sculptor with a special concern for surface and texture and a master of painted effects. She received a BFA from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia and pursued post graduate studies in sculpture at Les Beaux Art in Paris.
An accomplished and prolific artist, her professional life has included more than 85 major commissions for the public, corporate and private sector, spanning four continents. Among those are works for Bank of America, The Peoria Civic Center, E.I.Dupont, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Linwood, CA and the Hyatt Regency.
“My work is an ongoing exploration of archetypal symbolic imagery and the relationship between form, texture and color. I draw on my constant interests: anthropology, archeology, and architecture, incorporating universal themes and references to the journey of life, passage and transformation. I use timeless materials such as wood, metals, pigments and materials of the earth.
Although much of my work has been site-specific and public, my personal quest remains to find the best part of myself through my art.
My most recent work has focused on land and landscapes. I take photographs of land erosion, patterns left by rising tides on a beach, markings left by nature or humans onto rock formations, and these images work their way into my surfaces. These surfaces are made by pushing, pressing and manipulating the materials to evoke a sense of time and age."
